First Impressions Journal

I am reading the book "A Golden Age." The main character is a woman named, Rehana. My first impression of her was that she was a very nice woman and that she was really caring towards her children. I felt very sad for her since her children were being separated from her. At first i thought that she wasn't going to be a great mother that can give her children the things they needed and I understood that maybe it was best for her children to stay with their uncle since he was much wealthier and can give the children a better future. But after, i realized that Rehana was actually a hard working mom and that she'd do anything just to get her children back. The other characters of the book were Sohail and Maya, which were the children of Rehana. My first impression of them was that they were also caring and behaved really nicely towards their mom. Another character that I think is important is Rehana's husband, Iqbal. I thought that he was a really kind man that would do anything for his family. But I was really sad to find out, as soon as a read the book, that he was already gone. Another character that was in the beginning of the book was Iqbals brother named Faiz. He seemed like a great brother because he was willing to take care of his brothers children. But I found out that he and his wife, Parveen, were going to take the children all the way to Lahore, in the West Pakistan. I found this very upsetting because if I had children I wouldn’t want them to be far away from me, not knowing what was happening to them.
The setting is in East Pakistan (Bangladesh) and it seems like a lovely place. But I think another important setting is in the second house Rehana built for her family, and she named it Shona. The house is a very important part of the book since a lot of events take place in Shona, and also because Rehana knew that the house was very important to her in many ways. She even rented it for a family, the Senguptas.
The subject matter in the beginning is basically about Rehana wanting her children back and also being able to take care of them. I think that it is a very interesting subject, but the subject matter changed to war between East Pakistan and west Pakistan. This is also very interesting and made me want to read more and find out what will eventually happen, especially since Sohail is fighting for East Pakistan, Maya is also helping the soldiers in a way, and Rehana is worried about what will happen to them. This made me feel very happy because they're fighting for their country and it makes me want to do something for my country. Sohail, along with his friends, are also helping in the war which makes me glad to know but it also worries me because he is a very important character in the novel and would make a great leader.

Finally, the overall tone of the piece was very significant and had many relationship problems between family members and friends. It sort of helped me understand more that I should be more caring and loving towards others because i wouldn't know what would happen in the future. At first I thought it would have been a boring book about a family and their life but I am actually really entertained about what is happening in the novel and I am really interested what will happen in the end.
